Discipline presentation - Aquaculture overview (12/04/2021) - Online

The following discipline topics (Discipline presentation and Aquaculture overview) will be addressed in the theoretical lesson: I) Discipline goals; ii) Framework and Schedule; iii) Lecturers (discipline, invited); iv) Evaluation; v) Expectations; vi) Reference material and vii) Additional details. Moreover, an aquaculture overview will be presented, i.e.: i) Aquaculture (definition); ii) Locations; iii) Species (World, Europe and Portugal); iv) Production regimes and systems, and v) World data. The lesson will be presented by Dr Tiago Repolho.

Life Support Systems (13/04/2021) - Online

The following discipline topic (Life Support systems - LSS) will be addressed in the theoretical lesson: i) LSS - definition; ii) What is your objective?; iii) LSS configurations; iv)  Equipment and v) LSS Schematics. The lesson was presented by Dr Tiago Repolho. Dr José Ricardo Paula (MARE/FCUL) will perform an invited oral presentation under the topic "Life Support Systems - Aquatic abiotic parameters".

Target species - Biomodels (14/04/2021) - Online

The following discipline topic (Target species - Biomodels) will be addressed in the theoretical lesson: i) Brief Introduction; ii) Atlantic sea urchin (Paracentrotus lividus); iii) Common intertidal amphipod (Gammarus locusta); iv) Dwarf seagrass (Zostera noltei); v) Sea squirt (Ciona intestinalis) and vi) Blue mussel (Mytilus edulis). The lesson will be presented by Dr Tiago Repolho. Dr José Ricardo Paula (MARE/FCUL) will perform an invited oral presentation under the topic "Labroides dimidiatus - A Model for Behavioural, Ecological and Neurobiological studies".

The lesson will be presented by Dr Tiago Repolho. Dr Vanessa Letria (MARE/FCUL) will perform an invited oral presentation under the topic "Cephalopod aquaculture: Difficulties, bottlenecks and success stories". Dr Sandra Melo (MARE/FCUL) will perform an invited oral presentation under the topic "Zebrafish: Practical examples of a model organism".

Nutrition (16/04/2021) - Online

The following discipline topic (Nutrition) will be addressed in the theoretical lesson: i) Nutrition (Definition); ii) Main components; iii) Objective; iv) Live feeds; v) Enrichment Products; vi) Artificial Feeds and vii) Natural Sources. The lesson will be presented by Dr Tiago Repolho. The PhD student Eve Otjacques (MARE/FCUL) will perform an invited oral presentation under the topic "Cuttlefish buoyancy in response to food availability and ocean acidification". Dr Ana Maulvault (IPMA) will perform an invited oral presentation under the topic "Seafood quality and safety: concepts, methodologies and legislation".

Bioprospecting (19/04/2021) - Online

The following discipline topic (Bioprospecting) will be addressed in the theoretical lesson. Dr Ricardo Calado (CESAM - UA) will perform an invited oral presentation under the topic "Current Trends in the Bioprospecting of Marine Invertebrates".

Animal Welfare (20/04/2021) - Online

The following discipline topic (Animal Welfare) will be addressed in the theoretical lesson: i) Animal welfare (definition); ii) Research and animal production (e.g. aquaculture); iii) Legislation and iv) Welfare associations and organizations. The lesson will be presented by Dr Tiago Repolho. Dr Nuno Marques Pereira (Oceanário de Lisboa) will perform an invited oral presentation under the topic "Health Management in Research Aquatic Animals". Dr Vanessa Letria (MARE/FCUL) will perform an invited oral presentation under the topic "Cephalopod welfare: Guidelines and best practices".

Aquaculture and Climate Change (21/04/2021) - Online

The following discipline topic (Aquaculture and Climate Change) will be addressed in the theoretical lesson: i) UN sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); ii) SDGs and Aquaculture; iii) SDGs and Climate Change (CC); iv) CC and Aquaculture; v) CC and CO2; vi) Ocean Acidification; vii) Warming and Marine Heat waves; viii) Ocean Deoxygenation (OD) and ix) OD and OMZs. The lesson will be presented by Dr Rui Rosa with the assistance of Dr Tiago Repolho. An online interactive quiz (https://kahoot.it/) will be performed with the students. João Chambel (TMC Iberia) will perform an invited oral presentation under the topic "The importance of biological optimized light".

Assessment Tools – Biomarkers, Aquaculture and “Seaspiracy” (22/04/2021) - Online

The following discipline topics (Assessment Tools – Biomarkers, Aquaculture and “Seaspiracy”) will be addressed in the theoretical lesson: i) Assessment tools/biomarkers; ii) Maximum sustainable Yield data; iii) The status of Fishery resources; iv) Ocean Plastic pollution; v) Discards vs Bycatch. The lesson will be presented by Dr Rui Rosa with the assistance of Dr Tiago Repolho. An online interactive quiz (https://kahoot.it/) will be performed with the students.

Group assigments (23/04/2021) - Online

Within this T lesson, the students will present their group assignments (oral presentations, 6 groups). All presentations will be individually discussed between the lecturers (i.e. Dr Tiago Repolho and Dr Rui Rosa) and all studentsWithin this theoretical lesson, Dr Marta Pimentel (MARE/FCUL) will perform an invited oral presentation under the topic "Fish larvae culture and its applicability".

Coral aquaculture and threats to coral reefs (27/04/2021) - Online

Within the theoretical lesson, Dr Miguel Baptista (IPMA) will perform an invited oral presentation under the topic "Coral aquaculture and threats to coral reefs".

Trends and Challenges (28/04/2021) - Online

The following discipline topics (Trends and Challenges) will be addressed in the theoretical lesson: i) Aquaculture Challenges - Overview; ii) Trends - Aquaponics vs Mainstream Aquaculture; iii) Aquainov project and iv) Aquaculture “out of the box” approach. The lesson will be presented by Dr Tiago Repolho. Dr Catarina Frazão (NOVA SBE/FCUL) will perform an invited oral presentation under the topic "Aquaculture and Marine Protected Areas".

Within this T lesson, the students will present their individual assignments (oral presentations, n=18). All presentations will be individually discussed between the lecturers (i.e. Dr Tiago Repolho and Dr Rui Rosa) and all students.

Field visit - Laboratório Marítimo da Guia (Cascais, 30/04/2021) - In person

Within this theoretical-practical lesson, the students will perform a field visit to the Laboratório Marítimo da Guia (Cascais). A total of 2 groups will be guided by Dr Tiago Repolho and Dr José Ricardo Paula during the visit. An overview of the Aquatic systems (LSS) will be presented and shown, as well as several equipments used in Marine Biology/Aquaculture experimental research.
