The following discipline topic (Discipline presentation) will be addressed in the theoretical lesson: I) Discipline goals; ii) Framework and Schedule; iii) Lecturers (discipline, invited); iv) Evaluation; v) Expectations; vi) Reference material and vii) Additional details. Moreover, an introduction to the aquaculture topic will be presented, i.e.: i) Aquaculture (definition); ii) Locations; iii) Species (World, Europe and Portugal); iv) Production regimes and systems, and v) World data. A video (entitled “Blue Revolution”) addressing the topics of the theoretical (T) lesson will be presented. The T lesson will be presented by Dr Tiago Repolho.
LSS - Life Support systems (07/03/2023)
The following discipline
topic (LSS - Life Support systems) will be addressed in the theoretical lesson:
i) LSS - definition; ii) What is your objective?; iii) LSS configurations;
iv) Equipment and v) LSS Schematics. A video (entitled “Farming the Sea”) addressing
the topics of the theoretical (T) lesson will be presented. An
invited speaker, i.e. Dr. Rita Tomé (teclabs, FCUL, Portugal) will perform an oral
presentation on the topic "Mindset Empreendedor". The T lesson will
be presented by Dr Tiago Repolho.
Target species - Biomodels, Part 1 (08/03/2023)
The following discipline
topic (Target species - Biomodels, Part 1) will be addressed in the theoretical
lesson: i) Brief Introduction; ii) Atlantic sea
urchin (Paracentrotus lividus); iii) Common intertidal amphipod (Gammarus locusta); iv) Dwarf seagrass (Zostera noltii);
v) Sea squirt (Ciona
intestinalis) and vi) Blue mussel (Mytilus
edulis). A video (entitled
“Shellfish UK”) addressing the topics of the theoretical (T) lesson will be
presented. An invited speaker, i.e. Dr. Ricardo Calado (CESAM, University of Aveiro, Portugal) will perform an oral presentation on the topic "Current Trends in the Bioprospecting of
Marine Invertebrates".
The T lesson will be presented by Dr Tiago
Repolho.
Target species – Biomodels, Part 2 (09/03/2023)
The following discipline topic (Target species – Biomodels, Part 2) was addressed in the theoretical lesson: i) Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar); ii) Zebrafish (Danio rerio) and iii) African Clawed Frog (Xenopus laevis). Two videos (entitled “Norway's Salmon Farming Crisis” and “European Zebrafish Resource Centre”) addressing the topics of the theoretical (T) lesson will be presented. An invited speaker, i.e. Dr. Marta Pimentel (MARE/FCUL, Portugal) will perform an oral presentation under the topic "Fish larvae and Auxiliary cultures: Scientific Applicabilities". The T lesson will be presented by Dr Tiago Repolho.
Animal Welfare (10/03/2023)
The following discipline topic (Animal Welfare) will be
addressed in the theoretical lesson: i) Animal welfare (definition); ii) Research and animal production (e.g. aquaculture); iii) Legislation and iv) Welfare associations and organizations.
A video (entitled “Billion Pound Fish”) addressing the topics of the theoretical (T) lesson will
be presented. An invited speaker, i.e. Dr. Nuno Marques Pereira (Oceanário de Lisboa, Portugal) will perform an invited oral
presentation on the topic "Health Management in Research Aquatic Animals". Additionally, another invited speaker, i.e. Prof. Gabriela
Rodrigues (FCUL, Portugal) will perform an oral presentation on the topic
" ORBEA, the FCUL Animal Welfare Body: Relevance for teaching and
research activity".The T lesson will be
presented by Dr Tiago Repolho.
Nutrition (13/03/2023)
The following discipline
topic (Nutrition) will be addressed in the theoretical lesson: i) Nutrition (Definition); ii) Main components; iii) Objective; iv) Live
feeds; v) Enrichment Products; vi) Artificial Feeds and vii) Natural
Sources. A video (entitled “4 Pillars of Excellence in fish nutrition”)
addressing the topics of the theoretical (T) lesson will be presented. Additionally,
Dr. Ana Maulvault (IPMA, Portugal) will perform an oral presentation on the
topic "Seafood Quality". The T lesson will
be presented by Dr Tiago Repolho.
Trends and Challenges (14/03/2023)
The following discipline topic
(Trends and Challenges) will be addressed in the theoretical lesson: i) Aquaculture
Challenges - Overview; ii) Trends - Aquaponics vs Mainstream
Aquaculture; iii) Aquainov
project and iv) Aquaculture “out
of the box” approach. Two videos [entitled “Aquaponics Farm - Texas (USA)” and
“Saltwater Veggies”] addressing the topics of the theoretical (T) lesson will
be presented. An invited speaker, MSc Eve Otjacques (PhD fellow,
MARE/FCUL - Portugal, Caltech - USA) will perform an invited oral presentation
on the topic "Cuttlefish buoyancy in response to food availability and ocean
acidification". The T lesson will be
presented by Dr Tiago Repolho.
Aquaculture - Climate Change (15/03/2023)
The following discipline
topic (Aquaculture and Climate Change) will be addressed in the theoretical
lesson: i) Objectives of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); ii)
SDGs and Aquaculture; iii) SDGs and Climate Change (CC); iv) CC and CO2;
v) Ocean Acidification; vi) Warming and Marine Heat waves; vii) Ocean
Deoxygenation (OD); viii) OD and Oxygen Minimum Zones (OMZs); ix) Aquaculture
and Climate Change. An online interactive quiz (https://kahoot.it/)
will be performed with the students. An invited speaker, i.e. Dr. Maria Ana Dionísio (MARE/FCUL, Portugal) will perform an oral presentation on the topic "Espécies exóticas em
ambiente de aquacultura. Caso de Estudo: Mitilicultura na Lagoa de Albufeira". The T lesson will be
presented by Dr Rui Rosa, with the assistance of Dr Tiago Repolho.
Assessment Tools - Biomarkers (16/03/2023)
The
following discipline topic (Assessment Tools - Biomarkers) will be addressed in the
theoretical lesson: i) Case Studies (jumbo squids, sharks); ii) Tropical vs Temperate species; iii) Q10 Concept; iv) Ocean Warming (ETC,
ROS, HSPs); v) Ocean acidification (Neuro transmitters, Cognition, Behaviour);
vi) Aquaculture and “Seaspiracy”; vii) Feed conversion ratios; viii) Maximum sustainable yield data; ix) The status
of fishery resources; x) Ocean plastic pollution; xi) Discards vs Bycatch.
An online interactive
quiz (https://kahoot.it/) will be
performed with the students. An invited speaker, i.e., Prof. Romana Santos (FCUL, Portugal) will perform an oral
presentation on the topic "O mar é uma grande loja de ideias inovadoras". The T lesson will be presented by Dr Rui Rosa, with the assistance of
Dr Tiago Repolho.
Group Assignments (17/03/2023)
The students will present their group assignments (3 Groups - oral presentations). All presentations will be individually discussed between the lecturers (i.e. Dr Tiago Repolho and prof. Rui Rosa) and all students. An invited speaker, i.e. Dr. João Chambel (TMC Iberia, Portugal) will perform an oral presentation on the topic "The importance of biological optimized light”.
Individual Assignments - Career Perspectives (24/03/2023)
The
students will present their individual assignments (oral presentations). All
presentations will be individually discussed between the lecturer (Dr Tiago
Repolho) and all students. The following discipline topic
(Career perspectives) will be addressed in the theoretical lesson: i) Researcher example; ii) Career goals (research versus private); iii) Career paths; iv) Funding; v)
Something to remember. An invited speaker, i.e. Dr Catarina Frazão (NOVA SBE/FCUL, Portugal) will perform an oral

Within this theoretical-practical lesson, the students will be conducting TP work
under the assistance Dr Tiago Repolho. Main activities will include TP work
under the scope of the following subjects: i) Aquatic systems (LMG briefing; LSS/RAS overview on-site); ii)
Aquatics equipment (e.g. Saltwater/Peristaltic/Wave maker pumps, Air
pumps/blowers, Calcium reactors, Protein skimmers, Ultraviolet devices, Biofilter media, Fluidized bed filters, Reef-Bio Gro devices, Cartridge Filter Canisters, Coarse/Sock/External Filtering
systems, Activated carbon/Sodalime filtration, Ion Exchange Resins, Reverse Osmosis devices, Profilux monitoring device, GHL control Software, Solenoid valves, pH/DO/Redox
probes, pH/DO/RH/temperature portable meters, Digital/manual refractometer,
PAR/PFD/Fra-Red/LUX measurement devices, Water quality test kits, Gas regulator, Submergible heaters,
Portable/centralized seawater chilling systems, LEDS, Metal Halide lamps, Digital/Mechanical photoperiod controllers, Glass cleaners); iii) Abiotic
parameters monitoring and assessment (Dissolved Oxygen, pH, Temperature,

Within this theoretical-practical lesson,
the students will be conducting TP work under the assistance Dr Tiago Repolho and LMG researchers (Beatriz Palinhos, Melanie Court). Main activities will
include TP work under the scope of the following subjects: i) Paracentrotus lividus field collection;
ii) Paracentrotus lividus culture
(pratical briefing, general considerations/aims); ii) Paracentrotus
lividus strip spawning, fertilization and larvae culture; iii) Behavioural trials; iv) Abiotic
automatic monitoring (i.e. Profilux system). The TP lesson will be held at Laboratório Marítimo da Guia
(LMG, Cascais).
Guia Maritime Laboratory (Cascais - 24/03/2023)
Within the theoretical-practical lesson, the students will be conducting TP work under the assistance Dr Tiago Repolho. The main activities will include TP work under the scope of the following subjects: i) Paracentrotus lividus (larvae) observation; ii) Abiotic parameters monitoring and assessment (Dissolved Oxygen, pH, Temperature, salinity, PAR/PFD/Far-Red/LUX, total ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels). The TP lesson will be held at Laboratório Marítimo da Guia (LMG, Cascais).
