Social acceptance of renewable energy technologies (introduction)

This class introduced the topic of social acceptance of renewable energy technologies, considering political, market and social acceptance. A group of students (group 1) provided a synthesis of the article "Trends in Social Acceptance of Renewable Energy Across Europe—A Literature Review"  (requested reading for the class), and led a class discussion on this topic. 

The class continued with further presentations on key social acceptance contexts, exploring real-world case studies. 
The last part of the class entailed a 'fishbowl' participatory exercise, in which students discussed the case studies they had collected and the key social acceptance issues, which these case studies referred to. 

Energy justice and distributed systems

The focus of the class has been the practical implementation of energy justice principles in the energy transition. 
The class has critically analysed and discussed the application of energy justice to demand-side response, drawing on the analysis of an article ( Calver, P., & Simcock, N. (2021). Demand response and energy justice: A critical overview of ethical risks and opportunities within digital, decentralised, and decarbonised futures. Energy Policy, 151, 112198.). Following the analysis of the theme, students engaged in a class discussion, using a "world café" discussion method, to analyse in detail demand-side response solutions which can cater for higher energy accessibility and affordability, but also to discuss critical research gaps in the field. 

Introducing energy justice

The class introduced the topic of energy justice, its key ideas, principles and applications, and relevance for energy transition research.  A class discussion exercise was included. 


In addition, the working groups were created, with the goal to establish links between group work and individual work. 

Introductory session, presenting key concepts on Sustainability Transitions Research and its relevance to sustainable energy communities.

Introductory session, presenting key concepts for sustainable energy communities. The session included a presentation of the class goals and methodology. Student introductions (previous training, interests, projects) and expectations for the course were discussed. Basic concepts on Sustainability Transitions and its relevance for community projects and for advancing with the energy transition were outlined.
