Course topics

This course wll address a number of classic themes and authors from the tradition of analytic philosophy. Starting from the late 19th century and early 20th century, when philosophers were concerned with the language-thought relation and with developing an ideal language, we will move to leading figures of logical empiricism and naturalism, concluding with exponents of so-called ordinary language philosophy. 

Evaluation plan (in language of instruction)

Students are asked to complete the following tasks, which are all relevant to the final evaluation.
 

  • Complete one in-person written test (weighted at 30%) on May 14th, 2024.
  • Deliver an in-class presentation based on topics from the course (weighted at 30%).
  • Write an essay (1,000 words) based on topics from the course’s sessions – chosen by the student (weighted at 30%). Essay delivery is May 29th, 2024.
  • Attend and actively take part to class discussion. Regular attendance and participation in class will also be considered and factored into the final mark (10%).

 

The following skills and competences will be evaluated: (1) the student’s capacity to summarize a philosophical text (whether in written or oral form) by capturing its main thesis and the gist of its main argument(s) with sufficient precision and conciseness. (2) the student’s capacity to formulate critical questions that can spur a discussion (whether in written or oral form). (3) the student’s capacity to structure a philosophy essay, including presentation of the main thesis to be discussed, articulation of arguments, expression of their own philosophical ideas and arguments in written and extended form, with clarity, precision and good bibliographical support.
