Caros alunos,

DNZEB ISCTE FCUL Homework #1

1. Using data from:

International Programs - World Population: 1950-2050 - U.S. Census Bureau

September: Key World Energy Statistics: A world of energy data at your fingertips

Calculate the ratio between relative population growth and relative energy demand growth per year. If the ratio is larger than one…is that a good sign? Also, comment on renewable energy use, is it significant?

2. What is the current world average intensity of power generation (in kg of CO2e per megawatt-hour).

September: The long road from Paris: the carbon impact of new power generation

3. In the EU we are increasing renewable energy use (see figure 1):

File:RENEWABLES-EU28-ELECTRICITY-PRODUCTION-2014.png - Statistics Explained

Considering that the EU value of fossil fuel based power is the one you obtained in question 2, using the data from figure 1 calculate a new value for the average intensity of power generation. Next calculate approximately the % of renewables that we need to fulfil the 100 kg of CO2e per megawatt-hour target.

4. Buildings are the largest energy-consuming sector in the world, and account for over one-third of total final energy consumption. They are an equally important source of carbon dioxide emissions. Achieving significant energy and emissions reduction in the buildings sector is a challenging. Is the contribution of buildings larger in terms of primary energy, why?

5. In the figure below MEF represents most developed economies. How do you expect the rest of the world to change in the coming decades (energy consumed and distribution of services/residential)?

6. Read this text: Short Answers to Hard Questions About Climate Change - The New York Times

Use SI units. How much did the average temperature increased compared to 1880? How much can it ultimately increase?  How does the destruction of forest cause climate change?
