Stellar Continuum (part I)

5 Março 2020, 14:00 Israel Matute

Introduction to the stellar continuum of the stars with examples.

Several concepts are introduced and/or reviewed from previous courses such us: stellar flux, brightness, and (apparent/absolute) magnitudes. We discussed the -distance module- as a consequence of the dependence of the measured flux on intrinsic luminosity (L) and distance of the stars (d).

We introduced the concept of colors of stars and its connection to temperature. We ended with the description of a black body as a very good approximation to the continuum spectrum of a star.

Introduction to the course (part II)

3 Março 2020, 13:00 Israel Matute

- Continued with the examples of the role of Astrophysics in modern times especially focusing on the great advances that have occurred over the last 100 years.

- Several examples are provided (our own Sun, the stellar remnant, galaxy evolution and cosmology) that exemplify the scale and range of quantities measured in Astrophysical research.
- I especially stressed the importance for the student to understand the scale and magnitudes in the universe as a fundamental starting point of the course.
- Finally, I discussed what information and in which form the astrophysics use to get a better understating of the universe: the messengers.

The lecture finished with a list and description of the most common tools used by astronomers to study the Universe.

Introduction to the course (part I)

2 Março 2020, 13:00 Israel Matute

Discussion of the objective of the course and the main topics that will be discussed in the course program.

The functioning details of all the aspects of the course were also presented, namely, the exercise lectures (Teorica-Pratico), the evaluation process, and the tutoring hours for the students.

Interaction with students over the aforementioned  topics to get feedback on things like best hours for tutoring and when to carry out a mid-term evaluation.

To finish the class, I introduced the role of modern astrophysics within the larger framework of Physics and Sciences in general.

Not Taught.

27 Fevereiro 2020, 15:00 Israel Matute

Israel Matute had a motorbike accident in the proximity of the FCUL installations 30 minutes before the start of the lecture. Since the lecturer had to be taken to a hospital for a checkup, the theoretical class had to be canceled.
