Introduction to Galaxies (III) - Kinematics (II)

6 Março 2026, 10:00 Israel Matute Troncoso

In this lecture, we explored the following concept related to kinematics in Spiral & Elliptical galaxies:

  • The Tully-Fisher relation: Importance, Uncertainties & Implications
  • Kinematics: Elliptical galaxies
  • DM content in Elliptical galaxies
  • Scaling-relation: Faber-Jackson & Fundamental plane
  • The origin of the flattening in Elliptical galaxies

3 Março 2026, 17:30 Israel Matute Troncoso

Each student presented over 5 minutes one of the topics proposed in the previous TP (see list below). The presentation was followed by a short group discussion. The topics presented and discussed wre:

  • Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS)
  • Imaging Surveys
  • Spectroscopic Surveys
  • Machine Learning in Astrophysics
  • Cosmological Simulations
  • Tools to model the SED of galaxies (CIGALE + others)
  • Stellar classification (the H-R diagram)
  • K-correction
  • ΔE linked to redshifted photons - Where does it go?
