Expanding general topics related to Extragalactic Astrophysics
24 Fevereiro 2026, 17:30 • Israel Matute Troncoso
Expanding knowledge on general topics related to the course. During the TP class and at home, the students had to investigate the listed topics below and prepare a short 5 minute presentation for the next TP class. The topics proposed were:
- Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS)
- Imaging Surveys
- Spectroscopic Surveys
- Machine Learning in Astrophysics
- Cosmological Simulations
- Tools to model the SED of galaxies (CIGALE + others)
- Stellar classification (the H-R diagram)
- K-correction
- ΔE linked to redshifted photons - Where does it go?
Introduction to Galaxies (I)
24 Fevereiro 2026, 16:30 • Israel Matute Troncoso
This lecture introduced key conceot and ideas necessary for the course. Among the topics discussed, we list:
- What do we know about the Universe?
- Observations vs Theory
- Where is the information coming from?
- Observations: counting photons - Flux & Luminosity
- Photometry & Spectroscopy: what do they measure?
- Cosmological model assumptions
- Cosmological Redshift
- What is a galaxy?
Overview of the course
20 Fevereiro 2026, 10:00 • Israel Matute Troncoso
The students were introduced to the main objectives of the course and its assessment:
- Primary Goal: Provide an advanced understanding of astrophysical phenomena beyond the Milky Way.
- Approach: Integrates observational data, theoretical models, and computational approaches.
- Prerequisites: Prior knowledge of stellar astrophysics, cosmology basics, and general relativity.
- Assessment: Assignments, final project presentation and report, and exam
- Final Project Focus: Data analysis from surveys or simulations
