General introduction to the course. Distinction between Philosophy of Science, Epistemology and Metaphysics. The three disciplines, although independent, can be seen as strongly interacting when we analyze science from a philosophical point of view. A simple apple-falling example is offered to see how a very simple setting may prompt scientific questions that are entangled with many philosophical issues of different nature: metaphysical, epistemological, but also issues proper to the philosophy of science, as for instance that concerning the concept of law or that of causal relation. Nevertheless, when we talk about Phil of Science, are we talking about many philosophies of sciences (e.g. phil of physics, biology, etc..)? Are there common questions to these philosophies of sciences? Is there an interaction between what we call general Philosophy of science and the particular Philosophies of sciences that target specific issues in physics, biology, economics, etc..?
