SENSORY RECEPTORS

Sensory receptors at the peripheral ends of afferent neurons that receive stimuli (pressure, temperature, light, smell, sounds, chemical concentrations) from the environments and conduct that information to the brain or spinal cord. Sensory receptors and how the nervous system detects and processes stimuli from the environment. The role of the nervous system, central nervous system and peripheral nervous system, with sensory (afferent) neurons carrying information from receptors to the brain and spinal cord. 

The overall objective of the class was to demonstrates how sensory receptors allow humans to perceive touch, temperature, pain, movement, and color, and how receptor distribution affects sensitivity in different parts of the body.

 

Within this class we have explored different types of sensory receptors in the skin and eyes. Mechanoreceptors (detect touch, pressure, and texture), Thermoreceptors (detect temperature changes), Free nerve endings (involved in pain perception). In the eye, rods detect movement and work better in low light, while∫ detect colors and provide visual acuity. 

The practical activities were divided into three parts: 1) Histology of sensory receptors – observing tissues such as the retina, optic nerve, palm skin, and taste buds under the microscope to identify sensory structures; 2) Touch discrimination experiment – using toothpicks to test how different body areas distinguish between one or two points of contact, demonstrating receptor density and sensitivity, and 3) Movement and color perception – testing how the eye detects motion before color because rods in the peripheral retina are more sensitive to movement than cones are to color.

Recetores sensoriais em humanos. Estudo sobre mecanorrecetores, termorrecetores, terminações nervosas livres e fotorrecetores.

A observação histológica de diferentes recetores sensoriais, nomeadamente de preparações de:

gânglio espinal; papilas gustativas; pele da palma da mão; nervo ótico; retina, para percepção

da organização e estrutura dos diferentes recetores sensoriais 

Exercicios sobre discriminação do toque em vários locais do corpo e perceção do movimento e da cor.
