Luminescence

Types of luminescence and their main characteristics.

Photo-physical processes in molecules. Examples of Intersystem crossings (FRET, dipolar coupling, quantum collisions in He-Ne lasers, etc).

Difference between singlet and triplet states. Differences between fluorescence and phosphorescence.

Multiphotonic fluorescence and application in nonlinear microscopy.

Scattering

Rayleigh scattering, main characteristics, atmospheric phenomena; brief reference to Mie scattering.

Raman scattering (RS): classical model; stimulated RS (SRS); coherent Raman spectroscopies, CARS (see previous class).

Brillouin scattering: phonons, elastic waves in solids; stimulated Brillouin scattering.

An overview of quasi-particles
