Summary of some principles of tectonics of rift basin, salt tectonics and weak layers (or detachment levels). Foreland basins: flexure of the lithosphere and wedge tectonics. Strike-slip basins: releasing bends and restraining bends. Fundamental mechanisms of generation of the accommodation space for basin formation.

TECTONICS OF RIFT BASINS

1. Pure shear model (McKenzie model) illustrating stretching andthinning of the lithosphere.

2. Rheological composition of the lithosphere and different mechanical behaviour of mineral phases.

3. Lithosphere strength and development of weak zones in the crust and lithospheric mantle.
