· Ussing Chamber as a technique to study cellular integrity and the role of ion channels in epithelial transport
· Measure ion transport through Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) using the electrophysiological method Ussing chamber
· Study CFTR function in the cell line CFBE (Cystic Fibrosis Bronchial Epithelial cells) with wt- and F508del-CFTR expression
· Mutations in the CFTR gene lead to the disease Cystic Fibrosis
· Study how mutations in CFTR affect this channel activity
· Analyze the effect of pharmacological drugs in the rescue of these mutations, and show how the use of electrophysiology/Ussing Chamber can be used to predict the best drug for a patient with Cystic Fibrosis
· Pharmacological drugs used are VX-661 and VX-445 (also known as Tezacaftor and Elexacaftor, two CFTR correctors, that help to transport CFTR to the plasma membrane) and VX-770 (also called Ivacaftor, a CFTR potentiator, that maintains the channel open in longer periods of time)
