Introduction to molecular glycobiology. The structural diversity of carbohydrates in nature. Monosaccharides. Depiction of acyclic forms – Fischer projection, zigzag depiction. Aldoses and ketoses, D and L series. Acyclic forms conformation. Configurational prefixes. Monosaccharide cyclic forms, furanoses and pyranoses from D and L series. Fischer projection of cyclic forms, and assignment of the anomeric configuration. Conformation of cyclic sugars belonging to the D and L-series.
Introduction to the theoretical-practical course

Presentation of the program covering exercises on topics based on carbohydrate structure and nomenclature, literature search and discussion of papers to support the critical review writing (15 to 30 pages) and the seminar preparation (15 min). The latter is illustrative of an oral communication on a topic covered by the critical review. The evaluation of both the oral presentation and the written report contributes to 40% of the final classification.
