Revision of previous concepts of geometrical optics and gaussian beams

Preparation of the next two lab classes.

Gaussian beams: structure of the complex amplitude and interpretation of the different factors. Gaussian distribution of irradiance, divergence. Higher order transverse modes, Hermite and Laguerre.

Geometrical optics: conjugate plane equation and transverse magnification. Some conventions. Plane conjugation. Aberrations. Paraxial approximation. Cardinal points (F, F’. H. H’, N, N’) and origin for measuring distances. Systems with several lenses. Tele-objectives. Degrees of freedom of a component in an optical system. Short reference to implementing a point source with spatial filters. Some early warnings about observations in lab.

The role of the Master in Engineering Physics and the overall landscape of Engineering Physics.

Introduction to the course. Information available on Fenix. Contents (T). Laboratory work. Assessment. Background material requirements from other courses, namely Electromagnetic Waves and Optics (2nd year, 1EF) and Fourier analysis (series and integral transform).

Som examples of optical systems: imaging the black hole, autonomous navigation with lidars.

What can be measured when dealing with optical beams: optical observables of 1st order (beam geometry, spectrum, phase, amplitude and polarization) and 2nd order (correlation functions, coherence). Main architectural options of optical systems.

The concept of TRL (Technology Readiness Levels) and its importance in technology development, from basic concepts to operation.
