Phase matching: energy and momentum conservation in dispersive materials; using uniaxial materials for SHG. Overview of types of phase matching, in relation to the polarization of the signal, idler and pump waves.

Basics of coupled wave theory and overview of results for 2nd order nonlinear phenomena.

Third order materials and nonlinear optical effects: typical values of the nonlinear coefficient; third harmonic generation; self-phase modulation, Kerr effect, filamentation.

Non-linear dependence of P(E). Nonlinear wave equation, source term. Brief mention to the Born approximation.

2nd order materials: Second Harmonic Generation, Rectification; sum and difference of frequencies.

Interaction of a second order material with a monochromatic wave (with or without a static term), and with two monochromatic waves. Electrooptics in the context of nonlinear optics.

Introduction to phase matching, in relation to the conservation laws of energy and linear momentum.
