Data Models – Response to Perturbation and Correlated Variables

Continuing the exploration of Data Models, this theoretical class shifted focus from natural baseline fluctuations to physiological systems experiencing external stimuli. Students learned how to mathematically describe and analyze a system's Response to Perturbation, observing how variables react and recover following specific induced inputs. To illustrate this, the class explored two specific clinical applications: 1) Glucose Home Monitoring: Analyzing the dynamic physiological response to external inputs (such as meals or insulin); 2) Bronchodilator Pharmacodynamics: Predicting how the administration of theophylline acts to open obstructed airways in patients with chronic bronchitis. Additionally, the session transitioned into the study of Correlated Variables, demonstrating how to quantify the relationships and dependencies between multiple interacting metrics when explicit mechanistic structures are unknown. This concept was highlighted through the analysis of causally related variables in the evaluating of Hormone/Hormone and Substrate/Hormone series to understand their physiological coupling and underlying interactions.

Building upon previously introduced concepts, this theoretical class expanded on the practical application of Data Models. The session provided concrete examples of data-driven, phenomenological approaches, with a primary focus on analyzing spontaneous variables. To illustrate these concepts in practice, the class covered four specific models of spontaneous variables: Temperature fluctuations Urine potassium levels Gastro-intestinal rhythms Hormonal time series These examples highlighted how to interpret system dynamics without the need for external perturbations.
