Radiometry

22 Setembro 2022, 14:00 José Manuel Rebordão

Distinction between radiometry and photometries. Historical background, application areas, dynamic ranges.

Analysis of the generic radiometric configuration: sources, targets, background, media, instrument detector; emission, scattering, absorption; geometry; T-dependent blackbody emission and noise levels. Optical channel between target and instrument

Solid angles, stereo-radian.

Radiometric quantities (integrated and spectral): radiant flux, intensity, radiance, irradiance, emittance. Units. Dimensions.

Dimensions of the Poynting vector and Irradiance.

Electrical signal generation (at detector level) from irradiance (at image plane level) – simple model.

Presentation of the course

19 Setembro 2022, 10:00 José Manuel Rebordão

Introduction to the course. Information available on Fenix. Contents (T). Laboratory work. Assessment. Background material from other courses, namely Electromagnetic Waves and Optics (2nd year, 1EF) and Fourier analysis (series and integral transform).

What can be measured when dealing with optical beams: optical observables of 1st order (beam geometry, spectrum, phase, amplitude and polarization) and 2nd order (correlation functions, coherence). Main architectural options of optical systems.
